It. Must. Stop.

It. Must. Stop.

19-year-old University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana was killed this past week. She went to collect a parcel at her local Post Office and was killed by the man who worked behind the counter. Because he wanted to dominate her.

I cannot, I cannot find the words to express my horror and grief.

What is wrong with us men?

And before I hear you say that “I am not like that”, or “My man is not like that”….let us all own the ways that women are treated as objects by society. We Men leer at women and grope them and mentally undress them. And our Women protect us who do this, excusing our behaviour by saying “boys will be boys”, and refusing to censure us when we make jokes about women, or when we offer derogatory comments on the worth of women. This happens in boardrooms, where women struggle against glass ceilings and overbearing men. This happens in sport locker rooms, where women are subjects of male humour, and in sports leagues where we see lower financial reward for women’s sport; and this happens in religious arenas where women are prevented from being priests and imams by the men who dominate the faith and refuse women places of real influence and power.

It. Must. Stop.

My Christian faith teaches that women are made in the image of God. Every time I disrespect a woman I betray my faith in her Creator. My Saviour Jesus showed the greatest respect towards women, inviting them into his circle of teaching (Luke 10:42), commissioning them to be preachers (John 20:17) and valuing them as his disciples (Luke 8:1-3).

I do not claim to be without prejudice. But I will commit myself to continuing to be better at respecting the sacred worth of every single woman.
