Famous Last Words

A Study on the Book of Revelation
Peter S Grassow

The Book of Revelation is a difficult book in the Bible. This is because there are many different interpretations of the meanings of the various names and stories in the book. That is why, in the 4th century, Gregory of Nazianzus and other bishops argued against including this book in the New Testament. In the end it was included in the Bible, although it remains the only book of the New Testament that is not read within the lectionary of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

This teaching series, entitled “Famous Last Words”, refers to the idea that the Book of Revelation is positioned in the Bible in such a way that its stories are literally the ‘last words’ of Scripture.[1] The title also refers to Jesus – who is the Last Word of all that we need to know about God. I would refer readers to Eugene Petersen’s Reversed Thunder,[2] as well as N. T. Wright Revelation for Everyone (London: SPCK 2011). This study is to be read in partnership with a copy of the Bible – so that you can read the study passages. The quotes are from the Good News Translation, which has been chosen for ease of reading English.[3] May this booklet inspire you to participate in God’s dream of the renewal of the earth.

[1] Many Bible scholars do not think that Revelation was last of the Biblical works to be written.

[2] Peterson is the author of numerous books, and is also the translator of the bestselling Bible translation The Message. He was professor emeritus of spiritual theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia.

[3] The Good News Translation (GNT), formerly called the Good News Bible or Today’s English Version, was first published as a full Bible in 1976 by the American Bible Society as a “common language” Bible. It is a clear and simple modern translation that is faithful to the original Hebrew, Koine Greek, and Aramaic texts.
