What We Believe

What We Believe

This is a 4 week teaching on the basic foundations of Methodist belief. These are the beliefs of the Methodist Church, set out in plain English. I have avoided big words, deep theological terms, and complicated sentences. I want everyone to be able to understand our faith in simple language.

Each week we will examine one of the teachings. There are Bible readings and a summary which outline the subject for the week. This is then followed by devotions for each day and small group questions which helps ground the teaching in the Bible.

My prayer is that you will discover a deeper relationship with God through Jesus Christ. And that this booklet will be a tool that helps you follow Jesus more closely.

Covenant

Covenant

Moses is a central character in the Old Testament, and is also referred to 80 times in the New Testament. His life-story tells of a journey from darkness to light – from the darkness of murder to the light of God’s call at a burning bush; from the darkness of slavery in Egypt, to the pillar of light leading the people to freedom; from the darkness of wandering in a wilderness to the light of God’s presence on Mt Sinai

As we prepare to renew our Covenant with God, we look at Moses’ journey to light. If Moses, a fearful not always discerning leader can become the God-anointed leader of a nation, surely we can also make a difference in this world? While it is true that there are times when life is dark and difficult, and some challenges seem too daunting, we are reminded that the light of God “shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5). What an amazing promise! May our journey with Moses over the next 3 weeks inspire us to hold to the light of life, and so become a light to our dark world.

The Gift of Giving

The Gift of Giving

Over the next three weeks we hope to re-discover the gift of giving. We give because of God’s Grace given to us. It is our loving response to His love and blessings. The Bible teaches us what it means to have such a heart. When we live in stewardship to God it has a dramatic effect on the Church and its members. “Stewardship, of which giving money is a major part, is as important a Christian activity as worship, prayer, social service or evangelism” (The Gift of Giving – George Trimble 2003). When we are faithful in our giving, God promises to bless us; it might not be material blessings, but greater love, peace and joy in our lives. Have we introduced our monthly budgets to God’s Grace? Do we trust God enough to provide for us?

Psalms of Celebration

Psalms of Celebration

The Psalms are the Hymn Book of the Bible, and have been in use for many thousands of years. The word Psalms comes from the Hebrew word tehillim, which means “praise”. It is my hope that this Series will encourage you to praise God not only when things go well, but also in the deepest and most difficult times in our lives. We also are encouraged to celebrate the Grace of God and the gift of the Holy Spirit as we live our daily lives. His love and encouragement precedes us!
